Perfect Pour-over

I had done my best to make good coffee in a Chemex, and it tasted much better than the Keurig®. However, I hadn’t quite unleashed this unique hourglass coffee maker’s full potential until I met my good friend, Aaron Barker. After taking coffee-to-go to him a few times, he offered to make it for us instead, and coffee was never the same afterward. In addition, he taught me his unique method for the perfect pour-over, thus making my morning coffee routine all the more delicious.

Wordle

Recently I was introduced to the addictive word game, Wordle. It’s unique in that it’s a web-based game whereby anyone who plays tries to guess the 5-letter word of the day. The premise is that you have six attempts to guess the daily word. With each guess, the game will provide you with crucial details such as correct letter(s), letter placement, and a bank of used and unused letters to guide your next decision.

New Color, Who Dis?

Jules Davidoff, a neuropsychology professor, studied people in the Himba tribe who could not differentiate blue from green. Davidoff faults the language. He points out that our ability to see color is dependent on having a word to describe it, "When we decide to put colors together in a group [and then a name], what happens is that now that there's a category for that thing, the thing in that category jumps out. It gets louder and louder to your eyes. The category actually feeds back on your perception, so you notice it more.”

Peters Cartridge Factory

Peters Cartridge Factory is a well-known landmark in Warren County, Ohio. The 56 acres it rests on have been home to many different things, from a powder mill to a brewery. Peters Cartridge Company was founded back in 1887 by Gershom Moore Peters. Before he made the factory what it was, it was a powder mill owned by Joseph Warren King. Mr. King originally owned another powder mill in Goes Station, Ohio but eventually sold this to move to the more favorable location in Kings Mills, Ohio.

Ornamental Origins

As with almost everything Christmas, Germany is the founding country that nearly all seasonal decor originates. Back in the 1600s and likely even before, German’s would add fruits and nuts to trees once their leaves fell off to symbolize the promise of spring to come. Then in 1605, a fur tree was brought inside and adorned with paper roses, candles, nuts, and fruits, which was groundbreaking, beginning the tradition we’ve come to replicate. Early ornaments were made out of whatever items the families had available to them, which promoted creativity no matter the financial perspective. Before lights, trees would be decorated with candles and bits of foil to reflect the room lighting, making the tree sparkle from any angle.

Spooning The Soul

I have always felt that if you surround yourself with things you created with your own hands, your life will be more enjoyable. At most, you need a chunk of wood, an axe, a sharp knife, and a curved bladed knife (a hook knife). And from those simple tools, you can make endless possibilities of useful, lasting, and beautiful objects. Maybe even gain some peace of mind.

(Awkward Silence)

Conversation can be valuable in many ways. It is a daily necessity for life and an enjoyable pastime amongst friends and family. Conversation shapes how you grow up, how you talk and interact with people, and how you ask your wife what she wants for dinner. The art of having a good face-to-face conversation is slowly dissipating as the world becomes more technology-driven.

Joanna Newsom

Some music can transcend genre and time. I used to trade music (.mp3’s) around with friends via our hard drives filled with our collected catalogs back in the day. In 2005 my college roommate, Ryan, gave me the album, The Milk-Eyed Mender (2004) by Joanna Newsom. It begins with a harp plucking polyrhythms. I was hooked instantly. Next, Joanna Newsom’s voice comes squeaking in. Jarring at first, but then the creaky tones start to make sense as you realize you’re spelunking a treasure.

Mini-Me

In 2000, Frederik Braun was inspired by a railway model shop which provoked a rush of childhood memories. He reached out to his twin brother Gerrit and said, "We are going to build the world's largest model railway." Gerrit realized his brother was serious after receiving numerous enthusiastic and exhausting calls with new ideas. Although there would be tremendous technical and financial challenges, overall, they agreed, the project should be possible. They brought in a business partner, Stephan Hertz, and began spending their time substantiating their mutual dream and committing themselves to this risky adventure.

Discourse

When we approach a conversation to share our knowledge, it can quickly turn into a lecture no one signed up to hear. The alternative is to listen. Listening takes more calories. When we listen, we are removing the friction from culture, and we can begin to collaborate. This approach is difficult, and it will always require more work than publishing our reactions. Identifying problems is a good start, but that is not a solution. It merely gives us a target to direct our efforts. Attempts to solve problems are what we as a culture continually underdeliver.

Learning to Remember

In the modern era, it's no longer required for our brains to store overflowing amounts of knowledge, compared to centuries ago when there was not the luxury of finding any answer within a few keystrokes.

This cultural change raises a dilemma— how can our brains get stronger if we aren't hitting the "mental gym" as much?

Electric Vehicles: Transportation of the Future?

Tesla was the first company to bring attention to the electric vehicle market, causing large car companies to follow suit. Companies like Ford, GMC, Nissan, Toyota, and Chevrolet have released their version of electric cars or hybrid vehicles. Although electric vehicles typically cost more, most people prefer the simplicity of plugging it in at home and not paying for gas every month. Electricity can be cheaper than gas in most circumstances, and in the long run, it can save you more money in your travels than your typical electric vehicle.

Unwind. Rewind.

The yoyo leverages two contrasting behaviors; unwinding and rewinding.

The act of unwinding is releasing tension. It is a weekend vacation, evening walk, or kayak ride with a close friend. Unwinding is the easy part.

Rewinding, on the other hand, leverages tension to pull everything back together. It requires more skill and creates an opportunity to redo.
