Open Source to Open Force

I discovered a project I am a little bit obsessed with at the moment. I haven't been able to get through a lot of content, but I've tried to summarize the project by grabbing a few videos.

What got me started on this was a video I saw from @lovehulten:

Upon viewing that video, it lead me to a Swedish musician Martin Molin and his project, Marble Machine 2000.

Amazing right? The amount of work and creativity that went into that project is mind-blowing.

From that, I found Martin's new (4 yrs into it) project, the MMX.

What has interested me is this connection between having an idea to build a thing to the engineering process to get this thing to 100% functional capacity. But this time around, he is using a completely open-sourced platform to complete this project. Everything Martin develops comes from a place of: "Here is the problem" and "How do we fix it?" Those ideas can be a mash-up of ideas submitted by fans of this project. No matter the solution, ideas, drawings, assembly are all there for everyone to view and access.

A Rabbit Hole, Within a Rabbit Hole

Because of the scale of this project, the organization is key, and Martin has put together what he calls the Triforce of workplace organization. Something I find that can apply to any situation.

Triforce of workplace organization

3 corners of the Triforce triangle:

• The Life Changing Magic of Tidying by Marie Kondo

Konmari method:

– Intimate relationship with objects around yourself

– Organize by category rather than space

– Keep or toss if objects spark joy

– Positivity of tidying

– Everything needs a home

– Teaches a great system of organizing but doesn't help to keep it organized

• Atomic Habits by James Clear

Habits are the compound interest of self-improvement

If you want better results, then forget about setting goals. Focus on your system instead.

The most effective way to change your habits is to focus on not what you want to achieve but on who you wish to become.

The four laws of behavior change are a simple set of rules we can use to build better habits, 1. Make it obvious 2. Make attractive 3. Make it easy 4. Make it satisfying

The environment is the physical hand that shapes human behavior.

• Waking Up app by Sam Harris

Be mindful in the moment, take a step back, see the situation. You will give yourself the chance to do your desired action that is compatible with your new organized person's identity.

Thoughts

– Is open-source the future workspace?
– What are you making?
– How can the Triforce be applied to your workplace?
