Damascus forged steel is arguably one of the strongest metals on earth. The steel is so strong it can retain its edge even after multiple uses. Swordmakers first used it back between the ninth and the 11th century. It was well-known after a battle that Damascus steel swords would still retain an incredibly sharp edge. Not only is this steel known for being strong but also flexible; it can retain a bend far past the limits of average steel.

I had always heard about Damascus steel and always found it quite intriguing. However, it wasn’t until I was on a quest for a new kitchen tool that I even thought to look into it. While working for a few years in the restaurant business, I realized just how crucial a good knife is for prep work and making food. When I would go in for my shifts, I would have my mind set on one blade because it was always sharp and well-balanced. So naturally, I wanted a tool like this in my kitchen, but I wanted it to be durable and long-lasting.

I then stumbled upon my new Damascus steel kitchen knife. Made by Master Maison, its 8-inch chef’s blade and wood handle are meticulously well-balanced. According to their description, this knife, in particular, is 67 layers of Japanese AUS-10 Stainless steel, steel well known for its durability and edge retention. It came extremely sharp, and I set right to work with it. I use it several days a week when cooking food and prepping vegetables; it is now my new favorite kitchen tool.

Still intrigued by Damascus steel, I not only wanted a new tool but a new toy. Since I was a little kid, I’ve thought swords were the coolest thing. So to take my love of my new kitchen knife a little further, I decided to buy a bit of a larger blade. A hand forged full tang Damascus steel Katana. Although I did not have a specific use for this, it was just something that I’ve always wanted. Not too many uses for a katana except saying you own one, and I was pretty happy to be able to fulfill a longtime dream of mine finally.

Discovering something that will daily make processes in life easier is always a challenging task. Whether picking a new car to drive daily or a new pair of shoes, it’s always nice to research and invest in something you are passionate about. So finding this new kitchen knife was a huge win for me when it comes to cooking, and the sword has been fun.
